So what do you do when youβve exhausted all medical and non-invasive options to treat hair loss? It may be time to consider a hair transplant!
ππ»ββοΈ What is a hair transplant?
Itβs a hair restoration surgery that transplants hair follicles from donor areas of high density (like the back of your scalp) to recipient areas of low density (ex. frontal or vertex scalp). Physicians have been performing these transplants in the U.S. since the 1950s, but techniques have advanced over the years.
ππ»ββοΈ Harvesting the grafts
This procedure is performed under local anesthesia. There are two common transplant techniques. The traditional, older method is the strip method, where a strip of hair-follicle rich skin is excised from the back of the scalp. The excised skin is then divided into tiny follicular units with 1 to several hair follicles. The defect is repaired by the surgeon leaving a thin, linear scar.
The other method is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The surgeon uses a mechanical or motorized punch device to remove individual follicular units containing 1 to several hair follicles. The punched lesions heal on their own with minimal scarring.
After the follicular units are taken from the donor site and are prepared, they can be placed into the recipient sites which are also numbed with local anesthesia. These sites are small incisions created and designed by the surgeon to achieve a natural result.
Depending on the number of hair follicles being transplanted, the process will take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours. You might need another procedure later on if you continue to lose hair or decide you want thicker hair. Most patients see results between six and nine months after surgery; however, it can take up to a full year for some patients.
Would you guys consider a hair transplant?
