Stephanie Holt, a jeweller based in Warwick, lives in a house that is 500 year old but makes futuristic jewelry. She only got broadband last year. Her jewellery lives within a geometric landscape of sweeping, brutalist form. It’s #resin blocks of colour curve and twist, encased in gold plated skin like boiled sweets warped by time and space. They are inspired by the crystal structures found in nature and the throw away plastics that plague our planet. The interesting thing for me about her work is that it speaks of a new type of precious devoid of obvious market value. Once the resin is mixed and poured into a series of curvaceous structures, she files it down matching the shape of the metal to a mirror finish. Her colour language is rich and #modernist and her pieces called out to me at @goldsmithsfair where I awarded her my critics choice award on Tuesday in a ceremony that evening alongside Prime Warden Lord Bridges and Joanna Hardy. Stephanie went to the school of jewelry in Birmingham at 37 years old after she had a car crash that changed her life. She decided she had to finally follow her dreams. She had been a teacher for special needs children but Jewelry called her and she answered. Seven years later her dream now is to open an atelier in Warwick and ultimately Paris. Also to pass her skills onto young people with special needs who would never consider jewelry as an option. Her world is much more colourful now and to see how, drop into the Goldsmiths’ Fair this week and make your way to stand 24. As we were saying yesterday, it’s never too late. @stephanie__holt #futuristicjewelry #colourinfused #goldsmithshall #britishstyle #modernistjewelry #somethingdifferent #affordablejewelry
