The details of Winnifred Sandersons costume for @hocuspocusdisney, my edict from the producers was to refresh the costumes, but not copy them. The three witches disintegrated at the end of the last movie, so their costumes didn’t exist anymore, they had 30 years in purgatory to have new clothes made, they wanted a new ensemble to come terrorize the city. The original costumes designed by Mary Vogt were iconic, so we had a direction to go in, Our director Anne Fletcher said that everything had to have a meaning. So we gave a back story to the symbols on Winnie’s coat, it’s the 3 moons, 3 goddesses, the 3 powerful witches. And we added the ravens because of the Mother Witch where we first see these details, on her costume. As opposed to the bleach technique used on the original costumes we wanted the new costumes to be much more lavish, luxury fabrics , finer details. I had them embroidered with metallic thread and crystals. It was a many step process. We bought the velvet in a bright parrot green from @silkbaron then our dyer Michelle Flynn over dyed it to a deep chartreuse green, then we had to silk screen the pattern in gold paint by Francine LeCoultre, the fabric was beaded by the team at Sylvias Costumes in Hollywood, each coat was 150 hours of hand embroidery. The costumes and shoes were made by @westerncostumecompany then they came back to our workroom where we had to age and do the finishing work on them. The original buckles were silver snakes with a malachite stone, I designed a new buckle that had a forest motif with a moon and star and we actually made a pair of buckles, but Bette preferred just one buckled so we changed it, I brought back the malachite stone and had them made in brass to match the gold trim on the dress. The earrings were made by @hyperbole_accessories with amethyst stones. The capes were made with 24 yards of silk habotai with silk noil hoods, trimmed with a spiderweb lace, we over dyed them once they were done , then we twisted them when they were wet so they would dry with a texture, they floated beautifully in the wind. Then of course everything had a layer of @swarovski crystals to add sparkle.
