WARNING: This story contains details of sexual extortion and may affect those who have experienced it or know someone affected by it. • Aydin Coban, the Dutch man convicted of sexually extorting B.C. teenager Amanda Todd, who died by suicide in 2012, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. • Coban was convicted in August of extortion, two counts of possession of child pornography, child luring and criminal harassment against Amanda. • He is already serving an 11-year sentence for similar offences against 33 young victims in the Netherlands. He will serve his Canadian sentence after his release there. • Amanda had endured nearly three years of torment from Coban, who used 22 aliases to harass her online. • On the first day of the hearing, Amanda's parents read victim impact statements to the court describing their all-encompassing grief. • If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, here's where to get help: - Talk Suicide Canada: 1-833-456-4566 (phone) 45645 (text between 4 p.m. and midnight ET) - Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 (phone), live chat counselling online - Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention: Find a 24-hour crisis centre • Police also suggest the following to avoid falling victim to sexual extortion: - Never answer video calls from people you don't know - If you mistakenly connect with someone you don't know over a livestream, immediately hang up - Always answer video calls with the camera turned off until you know the identity of the person calling • Anyone who finds themselves targeted should immediately stop communicating with the suspected scammer and report it to police.
