There was a total blackout across the island — we lost all power. As the winds picked up outside, I laid next to my sweet boy, holding a battery-powered fan above his fevered, tired body. The next day, with the storm still brewing outside, he became more and more sick. An answer to a prayer came when our friend invited us to stay in their home with power. That night, I held him upright most of the night to help him breathe with the cool mist, giving him rest. I felt so much gratitude in those dark hours for the knowledge and training that I’ve gained as an ER nurse to keep him safe in my arms at home. And I couldn’t stop thinking of you ...
