Marys costume was fun to reimagine, the note from @kathynajimy was that the original costume was so heavy, and she wanted it to be lighter and more moveable. The costume was made at @ericwinterlinginc , I found a tartan fabric that resembles the original fabric and layered it over a open weave raw silk in a black a white pattern, with a burgandy silk petticoat, the apron is a piece of skinny multicolored raw silk with purple hand knit pockets. The original costume had filigree rings on the bodice, but I wanted the new version to have a back story. We were researching Wiccan symbolism, and my costumer @phoebelonghiart showed me the alphabet of the Magi and we added the words Fire, Water, Earth and Air . These four elements were seen as the basis of all life and a symbol of perfect harmony, for Mary as an alchemist. Her boots were custome made by Laduca shoes in NYC.
