Terrence Zhou is a Chinese-born, New York City-based designer. Zhou spent the first 18 years of his life in Wuhan, a city that is mainly industrial, where he never really got exposure to fashion. In his typical Chinese household, career fields like business and mathematics were the most sought after to make the most money. As a top student of his class, Zhou got his start in mathematics and engineering. Throughout his upbringing, he always found creative outlets, from using his mother’s auditing papers to paint and draw, to enrolling in Latin Ballroom classes at the age of six. At 18, Zhou made the move to New York City to study at Parsons and his fashion career took off. Known for his bulbous silhouettes and massive dresses, celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, Karlie Kloss, and Rina Sawayama have been seen wearing his pieces. We caught up with Zhou to talk about how his cultural roots have influenced his designs, how living in Wuhan has impacted him as a designer and penning the nickname “Bad Binch TongTong.” @bad_binch_tongtong
"Definitely! I don’t feel there are any technical skills, but my system of working and my own trees of knowledge of problem solving have built a foundation that has translated well into fashion. Since math is so abstract, when I generally feel confused, I have the confidence to power through."
