#TBT Here's 14 year old moi on Halloween circa 1994 as the Glitter Rock groupie #Columbia (played by @littlenellcampbell) from #TheRockyHorrorPictureShow. Posting these childhood throwbacks has become a yearly October tradition and people always seem to look forward to them...so voila! I believe in staunch commitment to a look, bold choices, being fearless and not half-assing anything. This costume was quite a labor of love and was tweaked and perfected over the course of a year. My mom made a good majority of it and I personally spent countless hours hand sequining the bustier/bow-tie and painstakingly gluing each rhinestone to the tap shoes (I can’t even explain to you Millennials and GenZ’ers how difficult it was to source this particular shade of pale blue stone in the pre-internet dark ages lol). I also spent many months if not years analyzing and perfecting #PierreLaRoche's makeup design. Pre-internet this also included many viewings of the film in the theater/on VHS. I used to go see Rocky Horror at the UC Theater in Berkeley, CA every weekend from ages 12-15 and it was my first safe space: all about self-acceptance and non-conforming to pedestrian societal norms in a deliciously queer 1970s countercultural, gender bending, Glam Rock way. It was one of the first places I never felt judgement, where there were no rules and where everyone thought I was fabulous. Middle school was particularly challenging for Moi. It’s an awkward age for many without adding in defiantly expressing your gender identity (at a time when it wasn’t chic to do so and virtually unheard of)! Looking forward to Rocky every weekend, being surrounded by much older, like minded eccentrics who took Moi under their wing (looking at you @deni_dela!
