#EXHIBITION José Parlá 《Breathing》 2022. 10. 27 – 2022. 12. 4 Gana Art Center Breathing, a solo exhibition of new works by José Parlá (b. 1973) is on view at Gana Art Center through December 4. Synesthesia, which aggregates the distinctive characteristics of José Parlá’s paintings, is one of the highlights of this exhibition. The Breathing series, to which this work belongs, is interesting in that it reflects the dreams and state of unconsciousness the artist fell into while in a three-month coma after contracting COVID-19. He recalls having had countless dreams while lying in his hospital bed; the countless flashes he saw and variety of fluctuating emotions he felt while immersed in a twilight world must have left a strong impression on his mind—an experience that goes far beyond an explanation using figurative language. Thus he sought to convey such transcendent experiences, which escape expression be it through shapes or words, in the form of abstract painting. As suggested by its title, it is hoped that through this work, which features more vivid colors than his previous works, the artist will be able to share—not only through sight, but also touch and other senses—fragments of the world he observed. @joseparla @mattblackstudio 호세 팔라의 개인전 《Breathing》이 2022년 12월 4일까지 가나아트센터에서 열린다. <Synesthesia>는 팔라가 그려내는 회화의 대표적인 특징이 집대성된, 본 전시의 백미 중 하나이다. 이 작품이 속한 <Breathing> 연작은 작가가 코로나19 감염으로 인해 3개월간 혼수상태에 빠져 있던 동안 꾸었던 꿈과 무의식이 반영된 결과라는 점에서 흥미롭다. 그는 병상에 누워있던 동안 셀 수 없이 많은 꿈을 꾸었다고 하는데, 무의식의 세계에서 유영하는 동안 보았던 무수한 섬광과 수시로 요동치던 다양한 감정들은, 작가의 뇌리에 기존의 조형언어로는 형언할 수 없는 강인한 인상을 남겼음에 틀림없다. 그는 어떠한 형상으로도, 말로도 표현할 수 없는 초월적 경험을 추상 회화의 형식을 빌어 전달하고자 했다. 공감각이라는 의미의 작품 제목이 시사하듯, 전작보다 더욱 생동하는 색감이 두드러지는 이 작품을 통해 작가가 내다보았던 세계의 파편을 시각뿐 아니라 촉감 등의 다채로운 감각으로 공유할 수 있길 바란다.
