Today we celebrate Pablo Picasso, who was born on this day (1881-1973). Picasso wanted to emphasize the difference between art and reality in his work. In this work L'Aubergine (1946) we get a sense of what Picasso means by that. He has flattened reality onto a surface of shapes and forms, transforming his subjects into abstract compositions. This transformation was Picasso's way of showing that art should not mimic nature.
