Aesthetics of Tragedy - Juan José Padilla is a bullfighter who lost an eye to a goring in 2011. I saw his face in a bar in spain and had ever since been intrigued by this ‘Pirate’ and of the taboo which has inspired countless artists through out history, from the last ever painting by Bacon to Picasso.. to Hemmingway. Bullfighting has been in the news this week as a bid to ban it was abandoned in France where it still happens today near the borders. I thought it had been banned long ago. As a child on holidays to spain my parents wouldn’t let me see one and last september I saw my first... violent contradictions.
Thank you to @ahmedyalramly for contextualising the experience in a brilliant essay - Aesthetics of Tragedy - that brought a lot of inspiring and transformative discussion to the whole experience.
And to @davidjenewein DOP and @melissaarras on B roll @helenatejedor on the amazing costume and to all for the fascinating discussions on life. @sarahkceres_atelier
