Six coats, handmade by the artist, were passed from one friend to another in cities across Romania, and everyone was asked to write or sew their name on a label on the inside of the coat. The work is an "act of resistance", Ana Lupas says. She made the installation in Romania in 1989, the last year of Nicolae Ceausescu’s oppressive communist regime. This 'performative sculpture' is hence the result of the social relationships of a group of makers who were unable to protest publicly.
We're very happy to announce that we've acquired the work 'Coats to Borrow' (1989) by Ana Lupas for the Stedelijk collection, with the support of @mondriaanfonds.
'Coats to Borrow' will be on view in the Ana Lupas exhibition at the Stedelijk in 2024. More info via link in bio.
