May is water safety month and The Dirt has teamed up with @swimamerica_davis to share this essential read for anyone who spends time around water with children. Each year in the U.S., nearly a thousand children lose their lives to drowning. It’s the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause for those under 14. These are devastating statistics—but the good news is: drowning is preventable. ➡️ Water safety is about more than just knowing how to swim. A good learn-to-swim program should teach children to: 💦 Roll over and float to breathe 💦 Call for and wait for help 💦 Enter and exit the water safely 💦 Never swim alone 💦 Respect all water: whether it’s a pool, lake, or the bathtub ➡️ If a child is missing—even for a moment—check the water first. Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent. Always ensure that barriers are secure and pool areas are monitored to prevent accidents before they happen. ➡️ Zoom or tap the link to read more about the five layers of protection every parent or caregiver needs to know. 🔗: https://thedirt.online/may-is-water-safety-month-an-essential-read-for-anyone-who-spends-time-around-water-with-children/
