A message from JACK’s newest Co-Director @stay_skye I hope ya’ll are finding ease and serenity this holiday season! 💜💜💜 My first few months at JACK have been a beautiful whirlwind but there is a particularly memorable day that I’d like to share with you. It was the kick off to our second week of Radical Acts, a performance festival where 14 artists were invited to share their interpretation of “radical”. Though it started like any unsuspecting Wednesday, it quickly turned out to be one of those days where anything that could go “wrong” was going to. At 10:30am our festival lighting designer tested positive for Covid, at 12:00pm our lead movement artist fractured their foot, at 4:00pm the sound system went out, and by 6:30pm I was printing cancellation signs for one of the two shows in our double bill! All the while, Jordana is so ill that she can't get out of bed. After improvising our nightly curtain speech solo, I finally sat down; My heart was pounding out of my chest and my body melting with exhaustion. But as the lights went down, Ian Askew and his collaborators began “Until Other Times,” I was struck with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. Gratitude to be in a space with such good people with work that is alive, smart, inventive, heartfelt, and worth the most challenging days. I know many of you share my feelings of gratitude for the work at JACK because in the short time I’ve been here I’ve heard countless stories of how much this space means to you. Providing space and support for this kind of work doesn't happen in a vacuum - it happens with the passion and generosity of community members like you.
