Last chance to see ‘Betty Woodman: Conversations on the Shore, Works from the 1990s,’ closing this Saturday, December 17 at our NY gallery!
The 1990s were a crucial period of development for #BettyWoodman and in particular, the artist's approach to her triptych ceramic sculptures. 'Athens,' a 1991 triptych that opens Woodman's exhibition, demonstrates a notable shift in Woodman's approach to scale, surface, and application of glaze across her works from this significant era.
Before 'Athens,' Woodman's triptychs were more modestly scaled vessels with traditional handles. In the 1990s, one of Woodman’s great innovations was to use a pottery wheel to flatten the handle, allowing the artist a larger surface on which to paint and draw in a range of vibrant glazes. Woodman also increased the scale of her triptychs and took a more gestural, playful approach to making her sculptures, which became more figurative in both their curvy, expressive forms and notable increase in scale.
