#MEMORIAM Eun Nim Ro “If I make a dot, it becomes a line, which becomes a circle. Then it returns to the starting point... Even without my presence, nature will continue to circulate.” The dot, which signifies the beginning of life, is a formative element that appears frequently in Eun Nim Ro’s paintings. The artist paints vivid portrayals of natural objects such as cats, fish and birds, using her unique method of applying almost-primary colors in bold brush strokes, and placing dots on them. According to Ro, these are visualizations of the life force, as the dot is an eye. One day, after seeing a blind fish at the aquarium, the artist realized that the living things in her paintings did not have eyes. From then on, she gave vitality to her works by painting the eyes, and these dots joined together to form lines. The lines gathered to be reborn into Ro’s beloved natural objects. The artist’s act of making dots on her clothes and shoes, and wearing them, can be seen in the same context. It is to bring life closer to art, and fill it with the life force. Like the moment the finishing touch is made, she expresses the life force by making a dot. “점을 찍으면 그 점이 선이 되고 선이 원이 됩니다. 이것이 다시 출발점으로 되돌아갑니다... 자연은 내가 없더라도 계속해서 순환합니다.“ 생명의 시작을 의미하는 점은 노은님의 회화에서 자주 등장하는 조형요소이다. 작가는 특유의 과감한 필획과 원색에 가까운 총천연색들로 고양이, 물고기, 새와 꽃 등의 자연물을 생생하게 그려내는데, 이들에는 모두 점이 찍혀 있다. 이는 생명의 기운을 시각화한 것으로, 작가의 말에 따르면 점은 곧 눈(目)이다. 그는 어느 날 수족관에서 장님 물고기를 보고, 자신의 그림 속 생명체들에 눈이 없음을 깨달았다고 한다. 그 이후 작가는 눈을 그려 작품에 생명력을 부여했고, 이러한 점들이 모여 선이 되고, 선이 모여 노은님이 사랑해 마지않는 자연물들로 재탄생했다. 작가가 자신의 옷과 신발에 점을 찍고 이를 입는 것 역시 같은 맥락의 행동으로, 삶을 미술에 가까이, 그리고 생명력이 충만하도록 하기 위함이다. 마치 화룡점정의 순간과 같이 점을 찍어 생명력을 표현하는 것이다.
