A message for The Supreme Court of the United States: read the room.
The Pew Research Center says that 61 percent of Americans believe abortion should be “legal in all or most circumstances”. Thirty seven percent believe it should be “illegal in all or most circumstances.”
So, what does this mean for a country that seems increasingly unmoored from the foundations that once made it the greatest democracy in the world? Where might SCOTUS go next when its core argument for overturning Roe v Wade is based on the fact that abortion wasn’t mentioned in a historical document that is now over 200 years old? How can this be a better gauge than what the majority of the population thinks? And can such a document — which is also used to justify the availability of machines designed to rapidly kill human beings — ever really be created in such a way that it can change with the times?
Abortion is a fundamental human right for all women, no matter where they live. America is lost and moving against the tide of progress we are seeing elsewhere on human rights. I fear this decision is a sign of worse to come.
