Community as a concept can feel elusive because of how frequently it’s thrown around, especially as a solution to the ongoing crises of the world. But the deeper I devote myself to it, the more it unravels in meaning. The more it does feel like the antidote we’re looking for. Community as a practice. Community as a series of conversations, with willing honesty and exchange. Community as 2 people to rent a karaoke room with on a Friday night, just because. Community as someone you run into on the dance floor, a month after meeting through a mutual friend. Community as “I miss you, can we go to dinner this week to catch up?” Community as both momentum and punctuation to a long week. Community as sharing fruit on a hot summer day in the park. Community as a time machine, somewhere to explore the past and future. Community as a sharpening of values that direct us toward a safer, freer future. Community as a source of courage, a way to heal and continue healing. Community can be hard for me to maintain as a neurodivergent person, because my capacity for connection varies drastically on a daily basis. So this ongoing relationship I have with these beautiful QTPOC and disabled communities in NYC is something I cherish deeply 🥹
