Freedom at Land’s End vs A Room with a View • I’ve always been highly influenced and inspired by the visuals in the film A Room with a View. I often have scenes from the film in my head when I’m making photographs. One scene in particular that resonated with me was the swimming hole scene. When I first saw it, I was filled with longing. Not sexual longing, but longing for male relationships that evaded me for the first half of my life. In the days leading up to this shoot I sent the guys a link to the scene. I wanted to imbue the photographs with the same sense of play and male bonding. For the first image here, I stayed back and chose a focal length that would give the images a more voyeristic vibe. I asked the guys to go into the light and play tag (what I didn’t know is that they were trying to tag each others balls). They executed my vision way beyond my expectations! I ended up combining images to give the viewer a sense of motion and get a more cinematic experience. The second image is a combination of screenshots from the movie scene. I wanted to share part of the clip here but there was too much full frontal to get around.
