In the third film in @BritishVogue’s 2021 #Pride video series, director Diane Russo-Cheng explores themes of familial love, acceptance and identity by focusing on the importance of her wife’s Chinese name. Born in Texas to Taiwanese immigrant parents, they were given an identifiably female American name, but were known as Ban Ban to their family and community. “I don’t care if you think I’m not from here,” Ban Ban says in the film. “My name doesn’t root me in a physical place. It roots me in an idea that transcends gender. It connects me to my home, my lineage, my bloodline, my heart.” Watch the full film on British Vogue’s YouTube channel.
Featuring @BanChengy, @DrewberJones, @AlianeKeo, @Jsizzletheroc & #NineMinCheng, directed by @Diane_Russo, edited by @SophieLouhou and commissioned by @TheRealMinnieCarver, @SylviaSuli & @Jess__Vincent. With styling by @NancyGoold, music by @IAmReenna, sound design by @DolceLDN and colourist @AriannaShiningStar.
