The international group exhibition “You Know Who,” organized by @kocholding and curated by Selen Ansen and Brigitte Pitarakis, is now open at the Abdülmecid Efendi Mansion in Istanbul, Turkey. Installed on the ground floor of the mansion is the hair and taxidermy sculpture, “Untitled #922 (The Strange Bird),” which I made between 1997 and 1998.
The Abdülmecid Efendi Mansion was designed by architect Alexandre Vallaury and once belonged to the Khediv of Egypt. Following his death, Sultan Abdülhamid purchased the estate for his cousin, Abdülmecid Efendi in 1895. Thought of as the “Last Ottoman Caliph,” Abdülmecid Efendi, was also a patron of the arts, and he utilized his home for his own artistic pursuits—writing poetry, composing music, and painting. The mansion, which combines elements from 19th century design with traditional Ottoman motifs, parallels the exhibition’s theme of examining iconography of the past to better understand our present-day conditions.
“Untitled #922 (The Strange Bird),” 1997-98, is installed in “You Know Who,” at the Abdülmecid Efendi Mansion, in Istanbul, Turkey from September 20 – December 11, 2022. This exhibition was organized by Koç Holding. The 17th Istanbul Biennial for contemporary art is concurrently running from September 17 – November 20, 2022.
