@samsmoothy staring (and dropping) down the face off ‘Instagram point’ / Mt Roy in June.
My first trip across the ditch since covid was to photograph a summer specific capsule when ‘the biggest snowstorm in x years’ etc etc decided to dampen the situation. I optimism for blue sky was soon drowned out by snow.
The night before a potential weather window and only a pair of ski boots in my possession, Jossi kindly saved the day, rummaging through his garage, finding all the bits and pieces to skin up early the following morning.
I’ve missed New Zealand’s uniqueness in winter the past couple of years whilst being bound to Oz across the ditch. Anyone who’s visited in winter would’ve appreciated the snow line glued only halfway down the mountain, opening up the amount of activities possible on any day both on and off the mountain.
Everyone always dreams about the ‘what if’ when looking across the terrain on the South a island, if only the snow fell to the ground with enough to ride. Standing on top of the towns most photographed mountain looking down at Wānaka with a serious amount of snow beneath my feet felt comparable with Northern Norway, or somewhere much further and colder than here.
