20 years ago, I began my research on the factors that enable women to be elected to presidencies around the world. The world looks a lot better today than it did then. ✂️: Until the 2000s, women executives (whether prime ministers or Fortune 500 CEOs) cropped their hair short and hewed to certain management styles. After pioneering women such as Argentine president Cristina Fernandez and Danish PM @hellethorningschmidt, we now have a diversity of role models for different modes of effective leadership. 🇺🇦: Women are in power across the countries which border Ukraine. Female leadership has never been more important to our very world order. The two countries most endangered by Russian expansion, Moldova and Estonia, had simultaneous female presidents and prime ministers. Putin, knowing Angela Merkel’s fear of dogs, famously brought one in a futile attempt to intimidate her. 🙋‍♀️: Beyond tactics and presence, it is sponsorship (even more than mentorship) which has accounted for the comparatively massive increase in women reaching the top ranks of power in the 2000s. Thank you to my own role model @alyssajrapp, a pioneering CEO, for the chance to (literally “mansplain”) the paths to power for women in both politics and business on the first day of class for #ChicagoBooth. #UChicago #mba #womenleaders
