In this work, Charley Toorop portrayed residents of the Willem Artnsz Huis in Utrecht, a psychiatric care institution. The work was titled 'The Imbeciles', a neutral term at the time. Now it's considered rather negative, which was the opposite of what Toorop was trying to achieve by portraying these people. The name was adjusted to fit the respectful attitude of Toorop towards the residents, namely 'Occupants of the Willem Arntsz Huis'.
Not only the change in title implies a difference in how these people were looked at, but this humbled viewpoint is also visible in the way Toorop painted them. What do you see when you look at this work?
'Occupants of the Willem Arntsz Huis' (1924) is now on view in 'Yesterday Today'.
