As the situation in Ukraine unfolds, I’m reminded of my own family’s history in the region. Two of my great grandparents came to the US from Lviv (formerly Poland, now Ukraine) in 1920 facing increasingly unsafe conditions for Jews. Years later, the majority of their family who stayed in Lviv perished in the Holocaust. My late grandfather made it his mission to compile as much family history as possible, and this is the first page of the booklet he wrote along with some maps of the city and the Janowska concentration camp where many of our family likely died.
I’m praying that history in the region doesn’t repeat itself and that the Ukranian people can find safety, and that the conflict can de-escalate however possible. War is hell.
