One more day to see PURE JOY in person if you’re in NYC! A space celebrating disability shouldn’t be rare but it is. Learning about these artists over the past month has been affirming and liberating. Disability is sexy! Disability is magnificent! Disability is insightful! Disability is a superpower. In a world that forces us to move quicker and extract from each other, disability teaches us to slow down, listen, and exchange support with each other. Disability teaches us how to be in better relationship with our bodies, which help us be in better relationship to everything and everyone around us. It took me decades to understand my experiences through the lens of disability. Studying the disability justice movement helped give context and meaning to my anger and fatigue. It gave me a lineage to place myself into. At Pure Joy’s closing tomorrow at @1969gallery, I’ll be reading some poems about my fears of being left behind and my search for language to describe my discomfort in social spaces.
