I’ve been trying to figure out how to describe #USMX200 for the last couple of weeks. I has no idea that @stephaniemvalencia would take me on one of the most transformational weekends of my life. Embracing my heritage has been a lifelong project, understanding it, feeling comfortable with it, feeling proud of who I am, feeling like I was allowed to claim it. Learning about Mexico, about the relationship between Mexico + US, being with other Mexicans, hearing from Mexican leaders, eating Mexican food, seeing Mexican art. I’ve been to Mexico a lot, but my first time in Mexico City made me see with new eyes. My heart has always been with the people, but now I see that I can lay claim to the history and the culture as well. I have so much more to learn!! The last two videos capture the most important moments for me: We went to Centro Historico, and happened to be there for Fifth Sunday of Easter, the celebration of the Samaritan woman. It was very beautiful, with beautiful flowers and singing. As we walked out into the courtyard, we walked on to a protest of sorts. The indigenous community was dressed in traditional clothes, playing music, singing, dancing, selling their relics and wares, and offering limpias. It was so powerful and so special. All I wanted was to meet the leaders of the protest movements, especially the feminists. As we were sightseeing, @alidamarie @rrocketto and I happened to walk into a GIANT #NiUnaMas protest. It was truly a moment of the universe putting you exactly where you are supposed to be, and it was so meaningful to share it with Alida. At the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, we learned about so much beautiful art and handicrafts made by the indigenous people. Many of these works were stolen by Europeans and were recently LENT BACK to the world-renowned Museum in Mexico City for display. I’m still fucking angry as I type this. Consider this a new campaign for my bucket list. This trip taught me the importance and power of reclamation, and I want that for every single one of us. More to come. 🇲🇽🇺🇸
