Planting seeds + telling new stories with @yirkita at #texsom 💚
Wine’s deep history is powerfully embedded in what's happening right now.
Questions we asked:
🏺 Where did wine begin?
🌄 What makes a wine culture ‘traditonal’?
🍇 When is a grape variety ‘indigenous’?
🍹 How did this wine get in my glass?
🌱 Who does wine belong to?
What we tasted:
🏺Qvevri wine from Dila•o in Khakheti
🧑🌾 Pipeño from Gustavo Riffo, in Itata
🍾 Ancestral-method catawba from Chëpìka, in the Finger Lakes
🍯 10-year Broadbent Verdelho, from Madeira
Where we traveled:
8,000 year-old shards of pottery in the Caucasus alongside men + women buried with their drinking horns;
200 year-old vineyards populated by the numerous unrecorded children of país + moscatel in Itata, near the place where the Mapuche secured three centuries of autonomy from Spanish rule by force of arms;
the Black Ridge woods where a vine was born that would be called catawba;
the ships setting sail from Cape Coast Castle carrying enslaved people above their barrels of Madeira, and the dining rooms and salons in American ports where that wine was prepared and served by the Black men who were America’s first sommeliers.
