The move towards renewable energy still has an impact on the land AND Indigenous Peoples! Free, Prior and Informed Consent must become enshrined in law! Repost from @peopleofredmountain

Lithium Nevada Corp (LNV) is proposing a man camp for a lithium mining project near Thacker Pass, on Shoshone, Paiute and Bannock land, in which they neglected to mention in the environmental impact statement (EIS). We are asking for a permanent ban on man camps as part of extractive projects, and a reform on the outdated 1872 General Mining Law to give Indigenous communities more consent to mining projects on Indigenous land.
Why a ban on man camps?
Man camps such as this one exacerbate the ongoing epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Relatives, Two-Spirits, and Transgender people (commonly referred to as MMIWGR2ST, or MMIW). Indigenous women are killed at a rate more than ten times higher than all other census-recognized ethnicities. Most of these murders are committed by non-native people on native land.
When mines, loggers, and similar projects bring transient working men to rural areas, the rate of violence against Indigenous communities goes up. When the population booms in these rural areas, Native communities and law enforcement are not equipped to handle the sudden influx of violence that these projects inevitably bring. A 2019 Bureau of Justice Statistics study conducted in Montana and North Dakota found a 70% increase in violent crime corresponding to the growth of extractive industry in the area with no such increase observed in adjacent counties.
The Indigenous communities of Nevada have suffered enough loss, and refuse to be subjected to the proposed "man camp" associated with the lithium mining project at Thacker Pass.
In addition to the harm and violence these projects bring to Indigenous people, they also bring destruction to the land and the climate. We are already seeing the deadly effects of climate change due to resource extraction projects, and continued lithium mines, as well as other types of mining, only further fuels the climate crisis, despite claims to the contrary.
