Five tips to capturing Alaska’s wilderness and the majestic eagles! With @zachnicholz / “Photographing wildlife can be a rewarding and challenging endeavor. The following are a few tips to help you get started: (1) For my wildlife photos I use a Nikkor 200-500 f/5.6 for the most reach. I do not use any filters, but do use an extension tube that converts my 24-70 into a macro lens for only $40. It’s a must-have, in my opinion. But in general, a telephoto lens with a long focal length will allow you to capture close-up shots of eagles from a distance, without disturbing them. A fast shutter speed will also be useful. (2) Pay attention to composition and lighting. Finding great compositions for me has become a feeling more than a science. The more time you spend in the forest, the more your eye is drawn to truly interesting compositions. So experiment with different angles and perspectives to add variety to your photos. (3) Research the habitats of the animals you want to photograph and try to visit at the best times of day for lighting and activity. In general, I feel the best time to get great wilderness photos is in the fall through the spring. Eagles may be more active during certain seasons, depending on the species and location. For example, bald eagles in North America may be more active during the winter months when they are in their breeding season. Eagles are also most active during the early morning and late afternoon when they are hunting for food. These times of day can also offer good lighting for photography. (4) I could sit and watch eagles for hours. In fact, I usually do. The last time I was out photographing eagles, I sat by this tree for almost an hour just photographing and filming them as they flew off and landed on this tree. This was a beautiful scene, especially with the snow. (5) Respect the animals: Remember that you are a visitor in their environment. Do not disturb or approach animals too closely, and follow any guidelines or regulations in place to protect them.” You can read the full interview with @zachnicholz and learn more about the topic by visiting the link in our bio!
