Family should be the people we feel most comfortable with, but oftentimes it seems there’s an expectation that because they’re family, they’re deserving of physical closeness and affection. Expressing and maintaining personal boundaries with family can be so difficult, but it’s important! 👏
Hattie and her mom are heading to their family reunion. Hattie WOULD be excited, but she’s not, for one particular reason. She knows her relatives will all try to hug her. But Hattie doesn’t like hugs. They make her feel all squirmy and uncomfortable. 🥴
Sure enough, as soon as Hattie arrives, the hugging commences. Hattie finds herself drawn to the one person who isn’t hugging, kissing, or holding hands - Great-Grandma. It turns out Great-Grandma feels the same way about hugs as Hattie does, even when it comes to hugs from people she loves. 👵
Great-Grandma teaches Hattie how to assert her personal boundaries and advocate for her bodily autonomy. She tells Hattie that if people don’t respect her wishes, she should tell someone she trusts so they can advocate on her behalf.
There are so many great consent books available these days, but I haven’t read many (any?) besides this one that address bodily autonomy when interacting with family specifically. This book is a winner! ⭐️
