The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report this morning confirming that we have already blown past the point at which it will be possible to end the climate crisis. Due to our own actions, we have created a world of deadly wildfires, floods, heat waves, droughts, hurricanes, and storm surges that threaten our very existence on this planet. We have already raised the Earth's temperature by one degree Celsius thanks to our rampant carbon emissions, and are headed for a 1.5-degree increase in two decades' time. On our current path, there is the possibility that we will reach four degrees above preindustrial levels, with consequences that are Impossible to predict. The chance we have to prevent our own extinction is rapidly slipping away, and the imperative now is to fight for systemic change. Yes, turn off the lights and separate your recyclables, but the action that is needed now is much greater. Corporations and governments have succeeded in manipulating us into believing our own actions are the cause of climate change, when they are dwarfed by the decisions made by those in power. Change must begin here, and it must begin now.
