Yesterday was Jamaicas 60th Independence day 🦋
As someone who was born and raised in London, I'm really grateful for the connection I'm able to have with Jamaica through family, and am so proud to be a descendant of people from this small island.
I often think about Jamaicas history, the reality of what my ancestors were forced to go through. The fact that to be a Jamaican is to also be a displaced African.
The richness and strength of culture that has been cultivated upon the back of such a dark and suppressing history is honestly inspiring.
Britain's economy was accelerated by the slave trade. Once you start looking, its an endless unravelling. Remnants of this history are all around us in London. In the street names, names of public parks, galleries, libraries. Money used to build these spaces. Its been built into the foundations. We mostly don't even see it, we aren't taught to see.
I'm looking forward to sharing my globe artwork for @twr__org next week 💚💛❤🖤
