Why do we need a black breastfeeding week? ____________________________________ #repost from @nailsbysparklenicole Ripped from black women were customs, traditions, community, family and bodies. While enslaved, black women were forced to serve as wet nurses for families who owned them. Forced to feed white children who didn’t belong to them while their own children were malnourished and often died. Why is #blackbreastfeedingweek black breastfeeding week needed? Well, 75% of white women reportedly breastfeed to 58% of black women. Black women need to be supported in their breastfeeding journey. Far too often in our culture, you hear “Just give that baby some formula they’ll be fine!” That formula fed is great but breastfeeding gives your babies SOO many nutritional benefits. If more black women breastfeed it could reduce our infant mortality rates by 50%. #Blackbreastfeedingweek is to raise awareness and normalize it. Celebrate and appreciate the black mom who is trying.
