Documenting Black Cowboys in Portland - After visiting a Black rodeo, photographer Ivan McClellan commenced his documentary practice focusing on Black cowboys in America. The history of which has often been erased. Originating in Mexico and being adapted in Texas with Spanish colonisation in the 16th century, Black cowboys have always had a place in Texas. After white slave-owners joined the Confederacy in the 19th C, Black people held down the ranch until they received notice of emancipation on Juneteenth 1865. "This knowledge of black cowboys in my hometown transformed my perception of home away from a place of poverty and violence to a place of independence and grit," 📹️: @eightsecs
