Today is #worlddiabetesday and I wanna talk about my amazing, beautiful, warrior of a partner, @renesellsla. At 40, she was diagnosed with Type 1 (incurable auto-immune disease) and at first, it was devastating. Usually you’re diagnosed with Type 1 as a child. This disease has broken her down and she’s built herself back up in such a gracious, inspiring and courageous way. This disease is tough- especially as an adult. It’s misunderstood, misdiagnosed, underestimated and cruel. The healthcare system overlooks the adults largely, and I’ll tell you- you don’t realize how “for profit” the system is until you need it to survive. It’s scary. And it is expensive. Type 1 in particular can be a very isolating experience. The majority of people with diabetes in this country have type 2- which is completely curable. Hmmmm I wonder why insulin is so expensive... but I digress. I’m learning so much, and I’m so proud of you, Rene. You are not alone.
