Roberts Projects congratulates Betye Saar on being awarded a 2022 W.E.B. Du Bois Medal from the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University.
The medal honors those who have made significant contributions to African and African American history and culture.
Trailblazing artist/visual storyteller Betye Saar (@betyesaar); basketball legend, cultural critic and activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; actress Laverne Cox; and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick are among the honorees to receive the W. E. B. Du Bois Medal at the eighth annual Hutchins Center Honors. The 2022 recipients also include famed writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; philanthropist and arts patron Agnes Gund; and corporate executive and former New York City mayoral candidate Raymond J. McGuire.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and director of the Hutchins Center, said, “We are overjoyed to gather once again in person to celebrate the Hutchins Center Honors, by presenting the W. E. B. Du Bois Medal to seven individuals who embody the values of commitment and resolve that are fundamental to the Black experience in America. Whether they’ve distinguished themselves in the arts, civic life, education, athletics, activism, or any combination of the above, these medalists show in all that they do their unyielding commitment to pushing the boundaries of representation and creating opportunities for advancement and participation for people who have been too often shut out from the great promise of our times
