Back home in Hamburg, when I was still in high school, I spend many nights dancing away in my favorite club Soulkitchen. After school we would chill at friends places and listen for hours to records of rare groove, soul, funk and reggae, at nighttime, we took our quench for more to Soulkitchen. It was a small stuffy extra funky place in the backstreets of the famous Reeperbahn. Many music heads gathered there and got their weekly fix. Music you wouldn’t hear in any other establishment. Like getting-schooled type of records were played there. So when I moved to NY I was sad to leave me favorite groove spot behind and mind blown when I found out that there was a Soulkitchen party in NY. By the identical name and the look of the flyer, I was pretty convinced I would find a similar vibe. Wow, it was everything and more I could have dreamed of. And not only did I find the same vibe, what I found there was my tribe, my NY groove. At first I would go by myself, not knowing a single soul in that funky kitchen, now, 30 years later, some of the people I met on that dance floor remain my nearest and dearest friends. From the first night I went, and every time thereafter, I would go up to DJ @frankieinglese and ask him to play my favorite Roy Ayer’s song. He always did, but never until the very end of the night. Tonight, we will be celebrating @jlube64 & @frankieinglese Soulkitchen’s 30th anniversary. I plan on dancing to “Everybody loves the sunshine”, around 4am, as the last song, and leave with the biggest smile on my face. Thank you Jack & Frankie, Soulkitchen was, is and will be forever everything to me. ❤️‍🔥 #followthemusic 🎥 footage from Soulkitchen Hamburg 1992 - all photos NY Soulkitchen 1994 & 2000 ©️ Manon
