Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) was a writer, an activist, an orator, a philosopher, and a hero. He was born into slavery in Maryland and escaped from bondage in 1838. Douglass became a vocal leader of the abolition movement, which sought to end the practice of slavery. In 1845 he published his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Douglass traveled around the United States and Great Britain, making speeches about his life and his cause. The publication of the Narrative brought Douglass widespread publicity in America and in the British Isles. The narrative and his own considerable abilities would be enough to spread awareness of the abolition movement and slavery in the Americas. Douglass’ story was among the most impactful of American personal histories.
