Lariba, a mother of four, lives in Teacher Village, a refugee camp located in the northeast of #Nigeria🇳🇬. Her husband was killed by the insurgent group Boko Haram seven years ago, leaving her and her children on the streets resorting to alms. Barely able to feed her family, Lariba took part in the project “Building Leadership Capacity of IDP Women for Effective COVID-19 and GBV Response in IDP Camps in Borno State, Nigeria”, funded by #WPHFund through its #COVID19 Emergency Response Window and implemented with the technical support of UN Women. In addition to supporting her with food items, the project provided Lariba with a startup business grant to buy and sell corn, beans, groundnuts, millet, rice, cowpeas, and locally made pasta. She also received training on leadership skills, COVID-19 prevention and response, gender-based violence (#GBV), human rights, and conflict resolution. After learning how to respond to COVID-19 in crisis settings and being empowered to identify, report and handle GBV cases, Lariba started a campaign to raise awareness of this form of violence and COVID-19 prevention measures among women and girls in the camp. “I constantly engage women to immediately take rape victims to the clinic before going to the police, as many need treatment for sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, vaginal fistula, trauma, and even death", she says. Now, offenders of rape are reported and punished, and cases have gone down in the camp. Known for her zeal to bring about change in her community, Lariba also contributes her time to sensitizing women, children, and families on COVID-19 prevention, educating them on the importance of wearing nose masks, making use of hand washing stations in the camp, and avoiding unnecessary ceremonies and gatherings.
