Carolee Schneeman, ‘Up to and Including her Limits’, 1973-73, performed and photographed in 1990. It’s been interesting reading all the reviews for the Schneeman show in London. None that I’ve read so far really address the question of performance documentation, and how ephemeral actions live on through the inevitable sleight of hand of still, mute photography. I remember writing about this work in my first book, Art and Photography, knowing full well I’d never seen the performance myself and knowing my readers probably hadn’t either. It was an exhibited photograph, reproduced like any other.
