What fact below did ya find most interesting?🎥@schmidtocean via @octonation : Ever heard of the Glass Octopus? 🌊 They spend their whole lives floating in the open sea, never touching the sea floor— so having a nearly invisible body in a #sea full of predators is ideal. 😅This specific species (Vitreledonella richardi) is very rarely encountered alive! So this footage is EPICCCC!!!! If ya look very closely, the only visible items are their digestive gland, optic nerves & eyes 👀Surprisingly, it also has chromatophores that look like someone sprinkled gold leaves all over its clear webbing! 🥕 See that carrot-shaped digestive gland? — These clear squishy brains with 8 arms are brilliant enough to float around with that gland vertical so it casts less of a shadow to predators!🎳 The Glass Octopus is roughly the size of a bowling pin (45cm, 1.5 feet) It’s a pretty small octopus when compared to other cephalopods that live in the deep, like the colossal squid who can be the size of a school bus! Honk honk 🚌 🦑 Also, ya might notice that instead of two rows of suckers on each arm, the suckers on this clear beauty are small, widely separated, & in a single row. As if they weren’t unique enough, the Glass Octopus goes the extra mile to stand out with its mating process. Like other open ocean male octopuses, such as the Blanket Octopus that breaks off its unique arm (also called a hectocotylus) to leave sperm packets with the female, the Glass Octopus has...well a different strategy. The Glass male still has a hectocotylus but (PLOT TWIST!)- it doesn’t break off! When mating takes place, the male will completely envelop the female in his webbing, ensuring that the sperm is released precisely where it needs to go! After mating, the female glass #octopus matures all the eggs inside of her mantle (body) as she navigates the massive open ocean.The glass octo-babies hatch directly from her, and their life-cycle begins all over again.
