Some frame grabs from the alt painted backdrop. I really wanted the light to be painterly to match the vibe of the background and because this movie was an origin story set back in history. I had an all Italian crew, and their English wasn’t too bad. I asked a crew member If I could get a Cookie. He looked at me funny And he came back about 20 minutes latter with the most delicious Italian cookies I’d ever had. I thought to myself “I like how they do things here!” The Problem was I should have said “cucoloris”which is the proper term instead of the American lighting slang “cookie.” I guess I should be glad though since the cookies were incredible. He said a cucoloris sadly wasn’t on the truck. He and I played arts and crafts with some foam core and diffusion of different strengths as we ate cookies and swapped stories. Our home made “cookie” coupled with some nets and flags and other oddities in front of the lights got the effect on both foreground and background I was after. From that day forward I vowed to myself when in foreign lands to always ask for “cookies”.
