I don’t post pictures of myself, really. There are always much more interesting things to show and tell you about. So please forgive this one. William Klein died on Saturday. I got to know him a decade ago and we worked on several projects together, culminating in the big retrospective of his photographs, paintings and films I curated for @icp which was due to close today. The show is extended through September 15. Klein was a giant, artistically and in his personality. It was all I could do to hang on to his coat tails when we talked. Here we are at New York’s Museum of Art and Design a few years back. For our public talks I would choose the images for discussion and surprise William with them on the night, to keep us both on our toes. He would look at them - his classic street photos, iconic fashion shots, abstract images, or stills from his countless films, and the insights and stories would pour forth. Cassius Clay. Vogue. Malcolm X. Jean-Luc Godard. Agnés Varda. Alain Resnais. Pélé. Pharrell Williams. John McEnroe. Karl Lagerfeld. Dorothy McGowan. West Africa in ‘63. Little Richard. Handel. Eldridge Cleaver. Elizabeth Taylor. Fashion. Advertising. The avant-gardes. Design. Chance, and the thousands of people he met and photographed on the streets of New York, Rome, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Torino, Paris. What an honour to have known and worked with him. He was charming, unpredictable, funny, empathetic, and always the smartest in the room. A true original. @williamklein_officiel
