The Right Notes features poems, prose and meditations from my notebooks written over the last few years. I finished it at the tail end of ‘20 but I wanted to let it breathe and revisit it later to go through each individual poem, line by line, again and again, not only to see if they still held significance to me but also to see how they held up under pressure. It’s difficult to ever be truly finished with a poem, or any piece of work, but I’ve come to believe the notion that perfection isn’t when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing more to take away. This isn’t to declare that it reached such a state, but it is my latest attempt. I’ve always found direction and guidance in the power of simplicity, and if one can tell a story in ten words then why go on for a hundred? There is, ofcourse, a place for expansive works, and I feel my work is best served in finding a balance between that and a brutal simplicity that cuts out all the added bullshit, and with this latest piece of work I’m confident that I’ve achieved that balance. I’m super stoked to share this latest anthology with you, and should you ever come to read it, I hope that it justifies your time and the space it may take upon your bookshelves or bedside tables.
