๐พ #icymi, Rajeev Ram (@rajeevram318) won the U.S. Open menโs doubles title, along with partner Great Britain's Joe Salisbury (@joesalisbury92), on Friday.
Ram is #Indian American and won silver for the U.S. at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. Ram and Salisbury have three grand slam titles together, including winning the Australian Open in 2020. Their most recent win makes them only the second pair in history to retain the men's doubles title. Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde were the first pair to accomplish this feat more than 25 years ago.
Though #SouthAsia has never produced a Grand Slam champion, writes Bhavya Dore for The Juggernaut, #tennis is immensely popular in the subcontinent and the diaspora. A 2021 report found that 10% of all 87-plus million tennis players globally were from #India, only third behind the United States (25%) and China (23%). A 2019 analysis found that #Wimbledon was the only non-cricket event in the list of top five most-watched sports events in India. The other three slams also made the top 10.
