The soaring cost of energy will be devastating for everyone – but even more so for vulnerable young people who are already struggling to make ends meet, while receiving 16% less Universal Credit than people aged over 25 years old. Young people like Mo are set to spend up to 77% of their standard allowance on gas and electricity. For under 25s in Edie’s situation, their energy bills will now cost up to 38% of their allowance. We’re calling on the government to urgently tackle the rising energy bills and increase the rate of Universal Credit, like they did during the height of the pandemic, to protect vulnerable young people from the cost-of-living crisis.
