"As the sea ice retreats from around the islands and heads further north, many polar bears are forced on shore. For the next several months they’ll have very little to eat. Thankfully for the bears, summer is also the time when the seabirds are nesting. The eggs of nesting birds provide a small but appreciated food source for these large predators, although they are no substitute for the fat-rich seals polar bears typically prey on. This mother polar bear and her cub—barely seen behind the rock—seem to have found the nest of a glaucous gull that is doing its best to run them off."
