One of the concepts I’ve been working hard to get my head around is just how radically different the life experience of a pilot whale must be from our own. Yesterday watched in awe as they pushed casually into a ripping southerly current, foraging in alternating dives in over 3000ft of water. Since their daytime feeding dives average between 700m-1km and most visible light only extends down to 200m, they’re leaving the sun-soaked shallows & routinely sinking into an inky, cold abyss. Compressed by over 1,300psi at that depth, they pursue their prey (primarily squid) along the ridges of a volcano, peals of echolocation from collaborating pod-members guiding the way.
