Looks from New York Fashion Week and the inaugural South Asian New York Fashion (#SANYFW), which ran from September 9 to 14 💃🏾
#SouthAsian designers who showed at #NewYorkFashionWeek (#NYFW) included @prabalgurung and @naeemkhannyc.
#NepaliAmerican Gurung’s designs included flowing, floral dresses, with leather accents and revealing bustiers. Kate Beckinsale walked the runway for #IndianAmerican Naeem Khan in a metallic showstopper dress. Other fits included several looks with raffia.
Meanwhile, @mayyurgirotracouture and @NomiAnsari headlined #SouthAsian #NYFW, which also featured @rivesseclothing, @margi.official, @bedi.nyc, @recoverseason, and @aariah_by_sabbineni.
“Lehengas turned into co-ord sets. Saris turned into gowns with drapes. Palazzo pants became wide-legged pants. We [at SANYFW] want to reclaim that narrative and introduce the world to the origins of these silhouettes and designs,” said founder Shipra Sharma (@theshipradiaries) in a press statement.
SANYFW drew both praise and criticism. On TikTok, several fashion and beauty influencers felt the event was not inclusive in terms of body type, hair texture, and skin tone. TikTok user alina.irl (@dasgupz) said, “I’m extremely happy that South Asian designers are getting the spotlight that they deserve, but that does not mean that they can get away with doing the bare minimum.”
